Writing with Jenna

Writing isn't just about publishing—but a way of living—built around teachings, community, and creativity. It's learning how to find inspiration when you're stuck, seeking out specks of truth in a world of chaos, and getting those few essential words on the page every single day.

On this site you'll find information about my virtual writing workshops, weekly coaching circle, and annual Travel Writing Master Class trip in Turkey!

I hope you'll join me in one of these life-changing creative endeavors.

ABOUT ME

I'm Jenna Scatena, a journalist and writing teacher.

My career began in 2009 as a staff writer and editor at San Francisco magazine. In 2014, I pivoted to freelancing and began working as an international correspondent for Conde Nast Traveler and writing for The Atlantic, AFAR, Travel + Leisure, BBC Travel, San Francisco Chronicle, Wired, O the Oprah Magazine, Marie Claire, Vogue, and Lonely Planet.

A few years ago I moved to Istanbul where I've deepened my storytelling skills in one of the world's most complex regions. I also adopted a streetcat named Frida and moved to a 300-year-old stone cottage in a rural village!

I've been teaching writing workshops for more than a decade and I've been a speaker at The Book Passage Travel Writers Conference, Women's Travel Fest, and Global Wellness Summit.

My travel essays are anthologized in The Best American Science & Nature Writing, The Best Women's Travel Writing Vol. 9 and Vol. 11 and An Innocent Abroad, and have won three Solas Travel Writing Awards and one Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism award through the Society for American Travel Writers. I received my B.A. in nonfiction writing from Ithaca College.
