ABOUT ME

I'm Jenna Scatena, a journalist and writing teacher.

 

My career began in 2009 as a staff writer and editor at San Francisco magazine. In 2014, I pivoted to freelancing and began working as an international correspondent for Conde Nast Traveler and writing for The Atlantic, AFAR, Travel + Leisure, BBC Travel, San Francisco Chronicle, Wired, O the Oprah Magazine, Marie Claire, Vogue, and Lonely Planet.

 

A few years ago I moved to Istanbul where I've deepened my storytelling skills in one of the world's most complex regions. I also adopted a streetcat named Frida and moved to a 300-year-old stone cottage in a rural village!

I've been teaching writing workshops for more than a decade and I've been a speaker at The Book Passage Travel Writers Conference, Women's Travel Fest, and Global Wellness Summit.

​

My travel essays are anthologized in The Best American Science & Nature Writing, The Best Women's Travel Writing Vol. 9 and Vol. 11 and An Innocent Abroad, and have won three Solas Travel Writing Awards and one Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism award through the Society for American Travel Writers. I received my B.A. in nonfiction writing from Ithaca College.
